South Africa technology: Didata buys ICL

FROM THE ECONOMIST INTELLIGENCE UNIT

South Africa-based Dimension Data (Didata) has bought a 51% stake in ICL East Africa, which operates in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, for an undisclosed sum. Didata will use the transaction to set up offices in all three countries, with the Kenyan establishment acting as regional headquarters. The company already has regional headquarters in the north, south and west of the continent. ICL East Africa, which is part of Kenya’s Sameer Group, resells hardware and software from suppliers including Cisco, Fujitsu-Siemens, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and Sun to clients including Standard Chartered Bank, Barclays Kenya, Coca-Cola, Nestlé Foods, Telkom Kenya and cellular operator Celtel. Didata, meanwhile, focuses on the provision of services rather than equipment.
